You’re planning the perfect cake smash photo shoot for your little one, but you also want to make sure you have the most delicious cake to enjoy afterwards. It’s a tricky balance between choosing something that looks great, as well as being tasty enough to eat again. The last thing you want is to have leftover cake slowly going stale in the kitchen. If you’ve never ordered a custom-made cake before, then you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed with where to start. Don’t worry; it’s not as difficult as it sounds! In this blog post, we will take you through each step of ordering and designing your perfect cake for your cake smash session!
Planning Your Cake Smash Session
The first thing you should do when preparing for your cake smash session is to choose the perfect date. The most typical time for a little one’s cake smash photography session is between 10 and 11 months old. Since many parents want to use the cake smash photos for their little one’s birthday, the whole process – from shooting to the delivery of the images – takes 3-5 weeks and no image will be provided before that, so it’s good to keep that in mind. Your baby might not have all of their teeth yet, but they’ll be able to eat up the cake just fine.
Cake Sizes and Shapes
The next thing you’ll need to decide on is the size and shape of your cake. Now, you might think that you want the biggest and most extravagant cake you can find. While a big cake may sound tempting, it may be hard for your little baby to smash it. Something that is best to go with is a smaller 6″ cake, something like a giant cupcake-sized cake. Not only do they make for much easier eating, but they often look great in the cake smash photos as well! Square shapes are definitely a no-no as they might block the baby’s legs in the photos. A 6″ rounded cake is the perfect size for cake smash photography.
Deciding On A Perfect Cake Design
If you have no ideas in mind for a cake design, then don’t worry. The cake has to match the design and colours we decide on for your little one’s cake smash photography theme. There are plenty of cake designs that you can select from to get inspiration. Perhaps you have a special theme or idea in mind for your cake design. If so, you’ll want to let the bakery know so that they can design the cake accordingly.
Where To Order Your Perfect Cake From
I’ve got asked a few times if it’s okay to bring a cake from a grocery store. You are free to get a cake from wherever you’d like or even bake it yourself, as long as it looks great for the photos. Honestly, I do suggest that parents get a professional cake. Cake artists are specialized in doing these types of cakes and they are REAL a-r-t-i-s-t-s, they work on every little detail to make it perfect for you and match the theme we are preparing for your little one. There are 3 main bakeries we recommend in Calgary:
How To Pick The Flavors
Once you’ve decided on the cake size and shape, then you’ll need to decide on the flavours. While you’re at it, you may also want to decide on a filling flavour if that’s something that is offered by the bakery. If it isn’t, then don’t worry. You can still have one without. But when it comes to cake smash photography, one flavour is the biggest winner: Vanilla! I’m not gonna get into many details here but you can imagine what a chocolate cake or a red velvet cake gonna look like after it gets smashed, right? haha
If you have allergies in your family, then it’s best to avoid ingredients such as nuts and dairy. And make sure to include any known allergy information to the cake artist so they’ll make one that is safe for your baby.
Do you want to include any motifs?
If you want to include any motifs on the cake, then this is the time to let the bakery know. If you have any specific designs or images that you would like included, then you’ll want to let them know as well. You may want to keep the design simple and let the cake be the main focus of the shoot. Alternatively, you could have something more elaborate designed if you’re wanting to go all out. If you’re going for something more simple, then you may want to consider a naked cake. If you’re going for something more elaborate, then you’ll want to pick a colour scheme that matches your cake design.
Pay for the delivery fee
You might be thinking “Why would I pay for delivery if the bakery is on my way to the studio?” or any other questions that may arise. First, it’s one less thing to worry about on the day of the session. Second, unless you have an extra adult to hold the cake for you in the car, you don’t wanna drive over a bump when the cake is by itself on the floor. Not fun, and probably a cake smash without the cake.
