Why is Newborn Safety Important?

Newborns are vulnerable and require special care and attention. They have fragile bones, weak neck muscles, and delicate skin that require gentle handling. It is important to take the necessary precautions to ensure that the baby is comfortable, secure, and safe throughout the entire photography session.

In addition to the physical risks, there are also emotional risks involved with unsafe newborn photography. A baby who is uncomfortable, distressed, or injured during a photography session can lead to a negative experience for both the baby and the parents. This can result in a loss of trust, a negative reputation, and potentially even legal action. That is why it is so important to hire a professional newborn photographer with lots of experience. Amanda has photographed over 1000 babies in her photography career.

Tips for a Safe and Successful Newborn Photography Session

By taking the necessary precautions and following these tips, you can ensure that your newborn photography sessions are safe and successful:

Preparing for the Session:

  1. Communicate with the parents: Before the session, communicate with the parents about what to expect and how to prepare. This includes discussing props, poses, and the overall vision for the session.
  2. Choose a comfortable environment: Make sure that the environment is comfortable and warm, with soft lighting and a quiet atmosphere.
  3. Have necessary supplies: Make sure that you have all necessary supplies, including clean blankets, props, and backdrops.

Handling the Baby Safely:

  1. Wash your hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before handling the baby to minimize the risk of infection.
  2. Support the head and neck: Newborns have weak neck muscles and require support at all times.
  3. Keep the baby comfortable: Make sure that the baby is well-fed and well-rested before the session. Keep the baby warm and comfortable with soft blankets and props.
  4. Avoid forcing poses: If the baby is uncomfortable or resistant to a certain pose, move on to a different pose or position.

Poses and Props:

  1. Avoid risky poses: Avoid poses that put the baby in an unnatural or uncomfortable position. Many poses done at our studio are a composite of 2 or more images. For example, for the “froggy” pose, the baby is always secure with an assistant holding the baby’s head. Then, a composite of two images is put together to remove the assistant’s hand from the photo.
  2. Use safe props: Make sure that any props used during the session are safe and free from sharp edges or potential hazards.
  3. Use appropriate lighting: Harsh lighting can be uncomfortable for the baby and can also cause burns or discomfort. Use soft, diffused lighting to create a comfortable and peaceful environment.
  4. Have an assistant: It can be helpful to have an assistant on hand to help with posing and holding the baby, especially for more complex poses.
