Newborn Photography for Twins in Calgary: What Makes These Sessions Different

Sep 14, 2026 | Newborn Photography Blog

When parents of multiples reach out to me, the first question is almost always the same: is photographing twins really that different from photographing one baby? The honest answer is yes, in nearly every way. Newborn photography for twins asks more of the photographer, more of the schedule, and more of the planning, and I have learned over the years exactly how to make it feel calm instead of chaotic. I want to walk you through how I plan and run a twin session at my Calgary newborn photography studio, so you know what to expect long before your babies arrive.

Why Newborn Photography for Twins Takes More Time

A singleton newborn session in my studio typically runs two to three hours. For twins, I book four hours, sometimes a touch more, and I never schedule anything after a twin session. The reason is simple math. Every step of a newborn session happens twice: two babies to feed, two babies to settle, two babies to pose, and two babies who may or may not agree on when they want to sleep.

Twins rarely fall asleep at the same moment. Often one baby is deeply settled while the other wants to be held, so I work in a rotation. While one twin is being fed or cuddled by a parent, I photograph the other individually. Then we swap. The paired shots, the ones every twin parent dreams of, only happen once both babies are in a deep sleep at the same time, and I never rush that window. Patience is the single most important skill in a twin session, and it is why the extra time is built in from the start.

Timing Feedings for Two Babies

Before the session, I ask parents to feed both babies about thirty minutes before arriving, even if it means gently waking one to sync them up. Full, sleepy babies photograph beautifully. During the session, I plan around a second feeding roughly halfway through, which naturally resets both babies for the paired poses in the second half. I always tell parents to bring extra bottles or be ready to nurse on demand, because twins burn through the plan quickly. This mirrors what many experienced twin photographers recommend, and you can see how a well-paced rotation looks in this lovely example of a calm studio session with one-month-old twins.

How to Prepare for a Twin Newborn Shoot

Preparation matters even more with two babies, so here are my most practical twin newborn photo session tips for parents. First, keep the babies awake for an hour or so before you leave home if you can. A short, gentle stretch of awake time before the drive means they usually arrive drowsy and ready to sleep. Second, dress them in loose clothing with zippers or snaps rather than anything that pulls over the head, so I can undress them without waking them.

Third, pack more than you think you need: extra diapers, extra soothers if you use them, and double the feeding supplies. Fourth, come rested yourselves, or at least as rested as twin parents can be. My studio is warm, quiet, and stocked with everything the babies need, and parents are welcome to relax on the couch with a coffee while I work. You can get a feel for the space on my studio page, and I promise it was designed with tired parents in mind. If you are wondering how to prepare for a twin newborn shoot beyond the basics, my full prep guide arrives with your booking confirmation, so nothing is left to guesswork.

Posing Twins Safely for Photos: My Favourite Paired Setups

Posing twins safely for photos is where experience truly shows. Two sleeping babies placed together are never left unattended, not even for a second. For every paired pose, a parent or my assistant acts as a spotter, keeping a hand within centimetres of the babies at all times. Composite editing also plays a role: some of the most intricate-looking twin poses are actually two safely supported images blended together afterwards, so no baby is ever balanced in a way that puts them at risk.

The Poses I Reach for With Twins

  • Heads together, bodies apart: both babies curled on a padded beanbag with their heads touching at the centre. It is the classic twin image and one of the safest.
  • The heart pose: babies angled toward each other so their curled bodies form a soft heart shape, always with a spotter’s hands just out of frame.
  • Stacked snuggle: one twin resting gently over the other’s back, built as a supported composite so neither baby bears any real weight.
  • Individual portraits: every twin session includes solo images of each baby, because they are two distinct little people and deserve to be photographed that way.
  • Family and parent poses: one baby in each parent’s arms, then both babies together with mom. Karen Byker captures this beautifully in her session photographing newborn twins with their mom in the studio, and those parent images are often the ones families treasure most.

I keep colours coordinated but not identical, often the same wrap in two complementary tones, so each baby has their own identity in the images. You can browse examples of my wrapping and styling in my newborn photography portfolio.

Why Booking Flexibility Matters More With Twins

Here is something every expecting twin parent in Calgary should know: twins almost always arrive early, often between 35 and 37 weeks. That means the usual advice about booking a newborn session around your due date needs adjusting. When twin parents book with me, I hold a flexible window rather than a fixed date, and we confirm the actual session once the babies are here and home from the hospital.

Because many twins spend time in the NICU, I also stay flexible on the other end. Some twin sessions happen at two weeks, others at five or six weeks once both babies are strong and settled, and beautiful images are absolutely still possible then. I have written more about this in my post on what happens when babies arrive early or late, and the short version is this: book early in your pregnancy, ideally in your second trimester, and let me handle the timing from there. Twin parents have enough on their plates without worrying about photography logistics.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a twin newborn session take?

I book four hours for twins, roughly double a singleton session. This allows time for two feeding cycles, individual portraits of each baby, and unhurried paired poses once both twins are asleep at the same time.

What is the best age for newborn photography for twins?

The ideal window is within the first three weeks after the babies come home, but twins are wonderfully flexible. Because they often arrive early or spend time in the NICU, I regularly photograph twins at four to six weeks with beautiful results.

Should my twins wear matching outfits for the session?

I usually suggest coordinated rather than identical styling, such as the same wrap in two complementary colours. It keeps the images cohesive while celebrating each baby as an individual. All wraps, outfits, and props are provided in my studio, so you do not need to bring anything.

If you are expecting twins in Calgary or the surrounding area, I would be honoured to create these first portraits for your family. My luxury newborn and maternity sessions are a full-service experience: styling, props, posing, spotting, and gorgeous finished artwork are all taken care of, so you simply arrive with your babies and enjoy the morning. Twin spots in my calendar are limited because of the extra time each session needs, so I encourage you to get in touch during your second trimester.
